System for learning and making decisions
OCC built a system for offenders with no basic numeracy or literacy skills to learn at their own pace for HERO (Health and Educational Support for the Rehabilitation of Offenders) with a content management system that we developed. With access to online healthcare information, prisoners can make informed decisions about issues such as exercise, drugs and sexual health.
This aims to address the key issues of improving conditions in prisons, reducing levels of re-offending, and reduce the number of people sent to prison. HERO tackles the issues by helping prisoners and prison professionals make more informed and effective decisions on topics such as health and education.
Skills matching for employment opportunities
It can also help offenders to prepare for rejoining the community-at-large. Skills assessment tools are included in the system to ascertain transferable skills to match these with employment opportunities via online job websites and employment programmes for ex-offenders.
Getting involved
Stakeholders can get involved in HERO by registering as a HERO user, joining the HERO discussion groups, or by becoming one of HERO's sponsoring partners.
